FotoLoft Gallery proudly presents solo exhibition of a vivid Dutch artist Floyd Douglas.
His works resemble captured on canvas surrealist dreams of a young European picturing modern perceptions of the world; they are filled with dollar notes flying across the skies, racing cars and invitingly smiling girls.
His art is the reflection of upbringing and freedom of the digital era in arts and depicts the power of youth, courage and boundless opportunities. Floyd’s works enable the reality to be modeled and we see urban landscapes leaving no space for human personality while the extremely violent colors remind that we live in the age of advanced technology which often displace the indigenous organics of the humankind.
Every element of the unconscious of the successful and daring youth breaks cover: dummy people, doll women, the golden calf which has again conquered its place on the human values podium and spits out cents and dollars.
Bright colors, dynamism, demonstrated texture of the works offer insight into the subconscious of the people of new generation living in a rapidly changing colorful world highly resembling the works of fantast writers illustrated by Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali.
The author derives inspiration from everything of interest for the youth and portrays this in his works illustrating such themes as fashion, arts, design, cinematograph, music, architecture and travel. Due to the multilayered nature of the works each observer can find in them something special for oneself.
Floyd Douglas: “The pictures I draw are like a film’s frames for me, occasionally even whole episodes. A non-existent film which is demonstrated there inside my mind and projected onto canvass… The process takes long time but it brings great pleasure, some special freedom for expressing my dreams. For me this is like the elixir of life should this comparison be justified”
Floyd applies the compilation technique and design of photographs which after digital processing turn into surrealist pictures. After the photographs have been printed on common canvass, the artist decorates his works in various manners: with pictures drawn by the artist with his distinguishing touch, with resins, stencil pictures (brush drawings made with a stencil) or gold foil.
To create an innovatory work the artist often complement the picture with a text message, reminder, abstract or words which are crucial for building the picture’s general image.
Exhibition will be held on April 4 – May 10, 2009.
Official opening ceremony will take place on April 3, 19:00 in the FotoLoft gallery.
